Last year's Fall/Winter Session was an awesome global group of dedicated young people focused on drawing and creating animation portfolios. These guys - from Ukraine, San Jose, Honalulu, Slovakia, Egypt, Hong Kong, India and yes, even a few from Toronto and Oakville - worked really hard and made steady progress in Life Drawing for Animation and in Drawing for Animation on their way to producing some top quality animation portfolios.
Dear drawing devotees - scare up a stack of 9B graphite sticks, a whack of newsprint pads and join us for APW Open Life Drawing Thursdays!
Animation Portfolio Workshop offers open life drawing sessions on the following Thursday evenings.
All sessions are from 6:30pm to 9:30pm in the Parlor at St. Matthew's United Church (729 St. Clair Ave. West). Poses range from 1 minute to 20 minutes.
There's nothing like drawing from life. In addition to the many hours of drawing from a live model in class, APW students draw and study animals up close when we visit the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November. Here are a number of animal drawings by recent APW students Alessia Carinci, Kaya Horiya, Niko Powell, Sarah Ball, Lily Ciao and APW TA Orlagh Lucyk McGowan.
We are humbled by the dedication, enthusiasm and general awesomeness of the 2015 group of Animation Portfolio Workshop students. After many months of Life Drawing for Animation and Drawing for Animation classes, APW directors and instructors spent time with each student carefully reviewing thousands of drawings.
Enter the APW Character Design Contest and you could win awesome animation software from Toon Boom. Toon Boom Harmony (with a free 90 min. webinar) and Toon Boom Storyboard Pro are exactly what you'll need to make your very own animation using your very own characters.
Werner Zimmermann is an artist/illustrator/life drawing instructor presently teaching life drawing to animation students at Seneca's Animation Arts Centre in Toronto.
I've been meaning to do this for a while, but now with the the new semester at Seneca I'm compelled to finally say it: Animation Portfolio Workshop is really making a difference in the quality of students that come into my first semester Life Drawing classes.
Although I am speaking solely for myself and not on behalf of Seneca College, after over 25 years of teaching I have seen all levels of students entering the life drawing classes. Simply said, there is a difference. Solid understanding of drawing fundamentals is immediately apparent in their work. Whatever they are doing, I personally endorse the work they do to prepare students for the creative challenges of animation programs regardless of school. Animation study, as rewarding as it is, is very challenging, demanding and often exhausting. Any preparation, especially of the quality of APW is well worth seriously looking into.Well done guys! Keep them coming!-Werner Zimmermann
