It's rare to get the best result on the first try.  Drawing variations of your first design allows you to try different variations and compare them with each other.  In this video, APW Director Vince Peets uses tracing paper to draw right on top of a sketch of a flamingo character design (original drawing by former APW student Fai V) to create several design variations. Bigger head, smaller body, longer legs, etc.  Changing sizes of shapes can have an impact on your character's design.  There is no limit to the number of changes you can make.  Have fun. Before you settle on your design, make sure you've explored some variations. Character Design Contest Rules
