Max Leroux from Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School in Aurora, Ontario wins 4th prize - APW Animation Art Supply Pack - for his colourful insect character design.
1. What influenced your character design idea? I've always been a big fan of science fiction, but ever since I first saw the Star Wars Rebels series, it gave me the inspiration I needed to create my own band of interstellar freedom fighters, The Black Rogues. My "awesome colorful insect creature" or Webber as I like to call him is part of this gang. He's an extremely intelligent, spider-like alien called a Scarachnoid and is the team's chief engineer. 2. Do you have a favorite animator or artist? I like all kinds of animation, from George Pal and Ray Harryhausen to Nick Parks and Ken Sugimori, who did the original artwork for Pokémon games. I must say that Moon Studios' lead artists Max Degen & Johannes Figlhuber did an especially great job designing the artwork for Ori and the Blind Forest. 3. What is your favorite animated film? Some of my faves include: Big Hero 6, Maya the Bee, How to Train Your Dragon 1 & 2, The Monster Squad, Planet Hulk, all the Wallace & Gromit films , the Night at the Museum trilogy and Bionicle: The Legend Reborn. I guess when it comes to great movies; I don't like to play favorites. 4. Describe your dream job. I chose video game character designer as my career choice because it's what I really want to do with my life. I've always liked drawing monsters and other creatures, but I've always wanted to bring them to life. Not in the real world of course. Things would get really bad, really fast that way. Whenever I see a video game hero battling some villain or monster; it makes me want to put one of my crazy creations in the digital world. It would also be fun to create a few comics, movies, and maybe a TV series while I'm at it.
